Anatomy of a Friend
A friend has an anatomy that resembles us, even when it differs from what we are. In a fold of the neck or of clothing, in an accent of the voice, in the gesture of the arms, in a scent, we find something that belongs to us. Perhaps this is why we wish to feel part of that beauty, and to give love a form of unity. The tree, the seed, the thorn belong to me, and I belong to them: I have seeds on my skin and thorns on my fingertips, branches in my arms, leaves on my head. The tree and I are brother and sister; the grass is my daughter, the forest my father.
